Day 1: Arrival Bali homestay

Your Bali homestay is a couple of kilometres from the water palace of Tirtagangga, which you can reach by following a path through the hills. The way there is easy because it's downhill all the way and once you get to the water palace you can go for a swim in the cool water. If you’re driving up into the hills from Tirtagangga you’ll turn off onto a tiny little road – it’ll take some skilful driving manouvering round all the bumps in the road. When you arrive at the Bali homestay, your friendly hosts will show you your room before treating you to a wonderful home-cooked meal. As you tuck into some delicious food and look out across the flower-filled valley you can't help but fall in love with this place.

Day 2: Guided walk from your Bali homestay

Accompanied by a guide, you’ll head out from your Bali homestay into the vast rice paddies with farmers working in the fields. In the paddies where nobody's around, you’ll often see flags or rattles to keep the birds away from the tempting rice. Not that it helps much…

The terrain here is pretty steep so you’ll need to do some vigorous climbing at times. You’ll come across the odd village where the chickens are usually the first ones to run out to meet you. The local villagers are very friendly and generally like welcoming you as a visitor. Look up into the tall palm trees you can see people picking coconut and ‘pumping’ wine with a flexible twig. The wine tastes a bit like cider.

Day 3: Departure Bali homestay

Your Bali homestay may not be the epitome of luxury but it's clean and tidy with a small bathroom. There's no air-conditioning but because you're in the hills the nights aren't so hot and sticky. Sitting out on the veranda nipping on your palm wine, you can look out across the valley and suddenly realise why Tirtagangga is the destination of choice for artists and 'long-stayers'.

After your Bali homestay ends, you can continue your trip with The Water Palace and the Temple, Dolphins of Lovina or the River and the Volcano
