Indonesia charity project

Indonesia Travel Plan is proud to support a school fund for girls in east Bali, a fund which was set up by the Dutch couple that run the Villa Arjuna bungalows from our the module Water Palace and the Temple. With the help of their guests, Els and Hans have set up the fund to provide secondary school scholarships for young girls from underprivileged families. On Bali young boys are encouraged to continue their education after primary school but there's often not enough money to send girls to school. Els and Hans are involved in the education of the local girls and work together with the teachers to determine which girls are eligible for a scholarship. Thanks to the school fund, 4 girls were able to continue their education and now in its second year the fund has supported up to 10 girls in secondary school.

You can support this project by indicating on the booking form that you wish to donate a one-off contribution of £5, although the donation is entirely voluntary. We'll add the £5 to the cost of your holiday and deposit 100% of it into the charity’s account. Your contribution will go directly to Els and Hans to purchase books, uniforms, school bags and pens.

If you want to keep your holiday in Indonesia and your contributions to charity separate that's fine - we're not seeking to create any moral obligation.

How does the school fund work?

If a girl is at risk of leaving school due to lack of funding, Hans and Els will visit the parents together with the teacher to discuss the possibilities of keeping the girl in school and explain the terms of the scholarship. Their daughter needs to have good grades to be eligible for a scholarship and the school fund will provide uniform, shoes, books, a schoolbag and pens. The funds do not go to the parents but are managed by Hans and Els. The fund is not supported by any commercial partners and depends solely on donations by their guests. Twice a year we receive an update from Bali; how many girls are currently on a scholarship and how they’re doing in school.

If you’d like to visit the school while you’re in Bali, please let one of ourIndonesia travel specialists know and they’ll get in touch with Hans and Els to find out whether there’s an opportunity to visit them when you’re in Seraya (during the module Water Palace and the Temple).

The school girls

The two sisters pictured on the left in front of their small house made of straw mats, are both in school supported by the school fund.

One girl that until recently lived in the mountains, was sent by her parents to stay with her grandparents in Seraya (the home town of Hans and Els and the Villa Arjuna) because she was so eager to stay in school. When the grandparents ran out of money after a year and were no longer able to financially support her education, the head teacher asked Hans and Els for help and with their help the girl is, very happily, still in school.

As an exception, there was one boy that also received support from the school fund. The boy was in first grade when his father suddenly died of cancer. The little money the family had was spent on doctors and medical treatment and the boy’s mother was unable to work because she had to look after the children at home, one of them a 3-month old baby. We’re very pleased to see the boy is doing incredibly well in school and is one of the best in his class!
