Day 1: Makassar to RantepaoThis morning after breakfast, you’ll be collected by our driver for the transfer to Rantepao, a 5 or 6 hour drive by private car. An hour later into the drive, the noisy traffic of the morning rush will make way for a quiet coast road, where you'll see fishing boats on black volcanic beaches and children playing around their wooden stilted houses. |

Day 2: Rantepao and surrounding areaToday, you'll pull on your hiking boots and head into the countryside to learn more about the Tana Toraja culture with our guide. Torajas have lived in this area for centuries according to their traditional culture. Families live together in traditional saddle houses, their distinctive pointed roofs sticking out above the trees. The rituals surrounding weddings, funerals and new buildings are always colourful and fascinating, as villagers come together and bring offerings of live chickens, pigs and cows, accompanied by lots of music and dance. |
Day 3: RantepaoThere's nothing planned on your itinerary today, so you can spend the day as you please. If there's a wedding or a funeral going on in the village it’s certainly worth seeing, and for a small fee (around £10) your guide can take you there. Remember that these are religious ceremonies, so you’ll need to be appropriately dressed. Sacrificing pigs and chickens is all part of the ceremony but be warned, the sound of squealing piglets is certainly not for the fainthearted…If there’s no ritual today there’s plenty of other things to do in the area. In your hotel, you’ll find maps of Rantepao and the surrounding villages within walking distance. It’s just 10 minutes walk from the hotel to the green rice paddies, or you can head to the market, where you’ll be greeted by the aromas of fresh spices, fruits and fish. Try a local mangosteen, a sugary sweet purple apple with soft flesh. |

Day 4: End of moduleToday, it's time to leave the rice paddies behind you as you travel back to Makassar, or fly to North Sulawesi for our Timid tarsiers among fiery volcanoes tour. If you want to experience more of the Toraja culture, try some trekking with our Sulawesi homestay. |
