Tour in Java - Spectacular scenery

Rumbling Bromo

Route: Yogyakarta - Malang - Mount Bromo

With this short tour in Java, you can explore East Java by jeep, visiting several small Javan villages. The trip begins in Yogyakarta and from here you’ll travel via Surakarta to Malang. In Surakarta, you can visit the palaces and scour the enormous markets for antiques and traditional batik paintings. Malang is at a higher altitude which means the climate is a little cooler. This colonial city set amongst coffee plantations is also the departure point for climbing the Tenger mountain range and no visit would be complete without climbing to the top of the Mount Bromo and walking along the crater’s edge. You'll get some unforgettable views from the top of the volcano on this tour in Java before heading back to your jeep on horseback.

Day 1: Yogyakarta - Malang
(Driving time: 10 hours)

Early this morning, you’ll leave Yogyakarta to begin your tour in Java with a  two hour trip to Surakarta, also known as Solo. Looking out of the car window you'll see the Prambanan towering high over the Javan countryside. Surakarta is a pleasant town famous for antiques and batik, and you can find these at two enormous markets in the city - the Pasar Triwindu (antiques) and the Pasar Klewer (batik). Just like in Yogyakarta, the heart of the city is centred around the kraton. Hidden within the palace walls lies a maze of narrow streets, two large squares, a mosque and the royal quarters.

After visiting the town you’ll continueyour tour in Java with a six hour drive to the city of Malang, which has a distinct colonial atmosphere, particularly in the streets of the Tugu district, the historic part of the city with buildings dating back to the Dutch colonial era. The city is split in two by the river Sungai Brantas - the south side is where you’ll find several restaurants and shops around the Alun Alun. Malang also has several interesting markets, like the flower market Pasar Bunga which is great to wander around early in the morning.

Tonight, you’ll stay in a friendly but basic hotel just outside the city centre.

Day 2: Malang - Mount Bromo
(Driving time: 6 hours)

It's the second day of your tour in Java and today you’ll head up to the highlights of East Java - the Tengger mountains and Mount Bromo. You won’t leave Malang until late morning so you can just take it easy for a while and save your energy for the Mount Bromo tour tomorrow.

In late afternoon, after a 5-hour drive you’ll arrive at your comfortable but simple hotel ideally picked due to its location close to Mount Bromo. Once you're settled in you can go for a walk along the crater rim and take a look in the little houses scattered across the slopes where the locals live. The fertile slopes are very green but up ahead you'll be able to make out the bare, barren rocks of the volcano that you'll explore tomorrow.

Day 3: Mount Bromo tour - Tour in Java

On day three of your tour in Java, you'll make an early start for your Mount Bromo tour with a wake-up call at 4am. Accompanied by an experienced driver, you’ll head into the mountains by jeep to an amazing viewpoint overlooking several giant volcanoes. It can get quite chilly up here, so make sure you bring a warm jumper. After you have been dropped off at the viewpoint by your driver, you will stand at the viewpoint looking out across the mountain range. When the sun slowly rises, it will colour the mountain range and volcanoes a deep crimson. In the afternoon Mount Bromo is often shrouded in thick clouds, so it's certainly worth getting up at the crack of dawn for this part of your tour in Java to catch the magnificent views.

From the viewpoint, you’ll jump back in the jeep and drive down narrow tracks to the sand plains where you will be dropped off. Here, you can choose to either travel by horse-back (not included in tour price,) or simply walk across the plain and up to the foot of the volcano. The climb to the top of the crater rim is only 250 steps, so you won't have to be super fit to make it to the summit. When you reach the top, you can look directly into the centre of the smoking volcano. You'll get an incredible feeling standing on Mount Bromo with the sun rising higher and higher on the sky and incredible views everywhere you look.

You will be transferred back to your hotel by mini-bus or by car where a well deserved breakfast will be waiting for you. After breakfast, this tour in Java will come to an end.
