Traditional Indonesia - Toraja family

At home with the Toraja

Route: Rantepao - Toraja country

If you really want to get to know culture of the Toraja, then how about living with the locals for a couple of days? During this traditional Indonesia experience, you’ll go trekking through the fertile Toraja valley with our guide and stay in the home of a local family in a traditional Toraja village. You’ll hike through fresh green paddy fields and dense bamboo forests with the odd climb here and there and stopping off for a cup of hot, sweet tea with the friendly locals.

Our traditional Indonesia trip is an exciting addition to Tana Toraja Rituals, if you’re looking for a bit of outdoor activity and wish to delve deeper into Toraja culture. You’ll spend two days trekking for up to 6 hours a day, walking along small tracks through the spectacular countryside. In the evening, you can play with the local children, enjoy a home-cooked dinner with your hosts and sleep in a simple traditional saddle house.

Day 1: Travelling to your homestay

Approx 6 hours trekking

Today, you'll make an early start and begin trekking through Toraja country towards your traditional Indonesia adventure. All you need is a daypack with some overnight things, so you can leave the rest of your luggage safely at the hotel. After a short drive into the mountains you’ll be dropped off at a breathtaking viewpoint where you’ll set off on the trek through lush green paddy fields and into valleys. The narrow paths can be slippery if it’s been raining so watch your step. You can set your own pace with the guide and on the way you’ll meet local villagers working in the fields, harvesting the rice (if it’s harvesting season). It’s a lot harder than it looks, but feel free to have a go and try it yourself. On the way you’ll stop off for lunch with fantastic views across the valley.

Towards sunset, you’ll enter the traditional Toraja village where you’ll spend the night in a traditional saddle house. Crowds of local children will be waiting for you as you’re welcomed by your friendly host with a cup of sugary sweet hot tea. Once you’ve unpacked your things, you can sit down and relax on a straw mat in front of the house. You’ll stay at home with the family in a basic room. Blankets are available, but the shower is little more than a tap outside. Make sure you bring a torch, as the power supply can be unpredictable here.

Day 2: Goodbye to Toraja

Approx 5 hours trekking

On the second day of your traditional Indonesia experience, you’ll be woken at the crack of dawn by the local cockerels, so like the Toraja you’ll be out of bed early. After a satisfying breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye to your ‘family’ and escorted by the children on their way to school you’ll leave the village. After half an hour you’ll part ways, the children waving as they head to school and you go the other direction through the rice paddies and forest. It’s mainly downhill today with a couple of stops in local villages for more sweet tea and biscuits.

Towards the end of the afternoon you’ll be collected by your private car for the drive back to Rantepao, but you can also choose to travel back by water on a raft. Let your guide know before you leave so he can arrange it for you (approx £40). Back at the hotel you can collect the bags you left behind and grab a nice hot shower, before relaxing in the evening with a cool drink at one of the restaurants along the river.

Day 3: End of traditional Indonesia trip

Today, your traditional Indonesia adventure comes to an end and you'll make your way back to Makassar to begin your next Indonesia trip. You could fly to North Sulawesi to go snorkelling with our Bunaken Island trip or explore rural Sulawesi with our adventure tour in Indonesia
