Trips in Indonesia Easy going Makassar
Makassar is the first in our list of these trips in Indonesia and will be your first introduction to the island of Sulawesi. At first glance it’s a busy, chaotic city - but there’s far more to it than concrete high-rises and noisy traffic. The city has a rich colonial past and you can stroll along wide boulevards breathing in the fresh sea air. During these trips in Indonesia, you can choose between a comfortable hotel in the centre of town or a more luxurious hotel built on stilts above the water with a swimming pool. In the evenings, you can make the short walk into the centre to try some local fresh fish. |
Trips in Indonesia Tana Toraja rituals
Central Sulawesi is home to the Tana Toraja, a proud ethnic group that still lives by traditional means and rituals. During this trip in Indonesia, you’ll go in search of the secrets of the Toraja, accompanied by our local guide. You’ll take a look inside a saddle house, learn about the cave graves and daily life in rural Sulawesi. If you’re lucky you may even get to witness a traditional wedding or funeral, giving you a fascinating insight into the rituals of the Toraja. |
Trips in Indonesia At home with the Toraja
If you really want to get to know culture of the Toraja, you could try living with the locals for a couple of days. During this trip in Indonesia, you’ll go trekking through the fertile Toraja valley with our guide and stay with a local family in a traditional Toraja village. You’ll hike through fresh green rice paddies and dense bamboo forests with the odd climb here and there, stopping off for a cup of hot, sweet tea with the locals. This trip in Indonesia is an exciting addition to our Tana Toraja Rituals trip if you want an active adventure to take you deeper into the Toraja culture. You’ll spend two days trekking up to 6 hours along small tracks through spectacular countryside. |
Trips in Indonesia Timid tarsiers among fiery volcanoes
Northern Sulawesi may be renowned for the fantastic snorkeling and diving around the islands, but the interior of Sulawesi is a hidden gem of culture and natural beauty. Nestled at the foot of two volcanoes lie the Minahasa villages with their distinctive wooden houses on stilts. Here, you can spot black monkeys, hornbills and the rare tarsiers in the dense jungle of the Tangkoko Batuangas National Park. During this trip in Indonesia, you'll head deep into the jungle, sleep in simple bamboo cottages and eat fresh mangos at a local market. |
Trips in Indonesia Flippers on Bunaken
Just off the northern tip of Sulawesi, hidden amongst the mangrove forests, lies a tiny island with pearly white beaches fringed by palm trees. Bunaken is true diver’s paradise with beautiful coral and dozing sea turtles. It’s the perfect place to lie in a hammock, walk barefoot through the sand and snorkel amongst the coral reefs for hours. Whichever trips in Indonesia you chosoe, flippers on Bunaken is certainly a wonderfully relaxing end to your Indonesia trip. You’ll stay in a simple wooden bungalow overlooking the blue bay dotted with little fishing boats. All buffet-style meals are included. |
